The one thread through Brandfest
Day 1: 8 ideas worth taking back to work
Day 2: 7 more ideas
Our session: the 2026 consumer data
Malaysia's biggest brand marketing conference wrapped after two packed days: 750 marketers, one stage, and a theme that turned out to be a dare, Challenge or Be Challenged.
We sat through all of it, presented some of it, and took a lot of notes. This is the full recap: the ideas worth keeping from both days, plus the fresh Malaysian consumer data we put on stage.
The one thread through the whole event
Strip away the categories, the marine paint, the instant noodles, the eWallets, the modest fashion, and the same message kept surfacing on both days.
The ground under brand-building is shifting. AI is reshaping how people discover brands. Value, not habit, now decides who wins the basket. And the old comfort blanket of dashboards and reach is quietly failing. The brands that came out of Brandfest looking strongest were not the ones with the biggest budgets. They were the ones who actually understand their consumer and stand for something clear. That is the lens we would use to read everything below.

Day 1: 8 ideas worth taking back to work
1. If your family won't use it, don't sell it.
From Farm to Brand Icon · Farm Fresh, Loi Tuan Ee
Loi grew Farm Fresh from 60 cows in 2009 into one of Malaysia's most trusted brands on one rule: never sell a product his own children wouldn't drink. Integrity as a filter for every decision, held consistently across every touchpoint, is what built the trust.
2. The real risk isn't a bold idea that flops. It's being invisible.
Boldness Builds Traffic · Etika, Amy Gan
In a crowded category with finite budgets, playing safe is the fastest way to be ignored. Etika's bold, unconventional tactics are built to turn disproportionate noise into real traffic. Smaller brands can't out-spend the giants, so out-focus them.
3. B2B still buys on emotion.
Why B2B Needs B2C Thinking · Nippon Paint Marine, Gladys Goh
Even technical, high-stakes B2B decisions run through people, and people bring trust and emotion into every choice. Win on performance, value, accessibility, and brand trust, and make functional products feel human.
4. Your eWallet is now a brand touchpoint.
Cash is Getting Ghosted · Ipsos, Arvind Rajaindran & Kuan Sawu Fang
As digital wallets become everyday platforms, they shape how people discover, choose, and stay loyal, not just how they pay. That reframes a channel most brands treat as plumbing.
5. Consistency beats chasing the sale.
Brutally Frank: 2 Marketers, No Spin · Mead Johnson & Spritzer, Tiffany Tang & Shiao Chan
Protect brand consistency over short-term sales, use data to build assurance when trust is on the line, and activate your own team as advocates. Every employee credibly influences the people around them.
6. One idea across every platform is dead.
One-Size-Fits-All: Dead! · REISE Digital, Kyian Keith & Ju Yi Wong
Localise beyond translation, give creators freedom instead of scripts, and build content native to each channel. The spine: decode the audience, question the cultural moment, earn trust, then go native. Content that reads as too sales-heavy gets quietly throttled.
7. Your brand has a sound, and you're probably ignoring it.
What Does Your Brand Sound Like? · Amplitone, Rendra Zawawi
Sound reaches memory and emotion faster than visuals, yet it's the most neglected part of most brand systems. The fix is a consistent sonic ecosystem applied across every touchpoint, not a one-off jingle.
8. 2026 belongs to value.
Subsidies, Swings, Spend · Numerator, Ang Swee Teng & Jennifer Ng
As Malaysia shifts from blanket to targeted subsidies, grocery spend has gone essentially flat, with money moving to essentials like utilities, insurance, and medical. Expect price sensitivity and value to lead 2026.
Day 2: 7 more ideas
1. Challengers beat giants with positioning, not budget.
Defying Market Leaders · Nongshim (GBA Corporation), Mohan Alagappar
Nongshim built share in a category dominated by heritage brands through sharp premium positioning, disciplined distribution, and riding rising affinity for Korean culture. Focus beat spend.
2. Strategic clarity beats reinvention.
Collab! Vision! Velocity! · Siti Khadijah & Roar Point, Mohammad Munzir Aminuddin & Long Yun Siang
Instead of chasing short-term tactics, the work centred on fundamentals: segmentation, portfolio clarity, brand architecture, and pricing discipline. That clarity, plus tight leadership alignment, drove a reported 170% revenue increase within three years.
3. Reach is easy. Credibility is the advantage.
Media: Reach or Credibility? · Annalect, Yong Shel Vei
Media penetration is no longer the challenge. As trust in unregulated digital content softens, credibility, and being discoverable and cited inside AI-generated answers, becomes the real edge. Brands need stronger GEO foundations, not just impressions.
4. AI is eating search.
AI Is Eating Search! · Similarweb, Jonathan James
Tools like Gemini, Copilot, and ChatGPT are becoming discovery and decision platforms, challenging traditional search. The rules of brand discovery are being rewritten, and marketers who ignore it lose the narrative.
5. Insights beat dashboards. Human truths beat data.
Insights! Insights! Insights! · Vase.ai, Julie Ng & Ellana Selvaraj
Our own session. The full breakdown is below.
6. Win the eCommerce shelf at the moment of intent.
eCommerce Visibility to Conversion · Omnicom, Kshitij Pradeep
In Malaysia's eCommerce economy, brands win through visibility, relevance, and conversion at the exact moment of intent. Rethink the digital shelf where search, media, content, and pricing collide, rather than chasing traffic for its own sake.
7. Brands don't have an engagement problem. They have a meaning deficit.
Nobody Cares About Your Brand! · Idealogic Lab, PiWo Chia
In a world obsessed with dashboards and hyper-optimisation, brands are everywhere and increasingly irrelevant. Stop optimising what's easy to measure. Build what makes people actually care.
Our session: INSIGHTS! INSIGHTS! INSIGHTS!
The Predictive Edge: Unpublished Useful Insights Defining the AI-Age Consumer
At Session 5, our CEO & Co-Founder Julie Ng and Head of Research & Customer Success Ellana Selvaraj shared Insights! Insights! Insights!, a look at the AI-age consumer built on fresh, unpublished Malaysian data. Here's the part worth acting on.
AI is now a discovery channel, but not the one you think. 38% of Malaysians now research new brands using AI, across every generation, not just Gen Z. But AI ranks 7th, behind online reviews, video reviews (58%), e-commerce and search. The honest read: AI is a transparent auditor of information, not a replacement for SEO. Don't abandon your fundamentals; optimise them.
Platform beats age for conversion. TikTok was the top discovery platform, and 85% of TikTok users bought something after seeing it, far ahead of YouTube (33%). Conversion is platform-driven, not age-driven, so test TikTok even for audiences over 45, especially in fashion, beauty, and electronics.
Malls are social hubs now. 91% of Malaysians visited a mall in the past month, but many go mainly to socialise or eat rather than buy. The move: turn a meaningful share of physical space into experiential moments, product trials, photo spots, review-worthy experiences, rather than pure transaction.
Loyalty is fluid, and value is the driver. 83% of FMCG shoppers switched at least one brand in 2026, though many rotate rather than leave for good. "Smart spending" is now a point of pride, even among high earners. Only 9% pick a product primarily on promotion, so discounts are a trigger, not a strategy. Reframe products as the smart choice, not the cheap one.
East Malaysia behaves differently. It's more physical-first, with higher in-mall frequency, and local pride shapes switching. Worth a dedicated hypothesis before committing 2027 budget.
The takeaway
Two days, fifteen ideas, and one conclusion: dashboards and reach won't save you. Knowing your consumer, and standing for something, will. That's the bet we make every day at Vase.ai.
